12 mile Zen Run (Last Sunday)

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

It’s been almost 2 weeks since I ran with my Garmin watch. I sent it back to Garmin for repairs and somehow, I don’t miss it that much. I’ve been really enjoying my so-called “Zen Runs”.

Last Sunday’s 12 mile zen run early in the morning really reminded me of what made me love running. The “out-of-body” experience that I only get when I run alone, before the sun comes up, the peacefulness. The really keen senses which makes me feel for a few seconds like superhuman.

I originally planned for a 10 miler, but when I got to the 3 mile mark, I was feeling so good that I started thinking about going the distance. 12 miles was the farthest I’ve run since I ran my first full-marathon last January. The temperatures had gone up the last couple of days and so I’ve trimmed down my miles but last Sunday was perfect. It was actually a bit chilly at 6 a.m. So I took advantage of it. I had a feeling these are the last of the cooler temps.

Without my Garmin or any music, I was able to focus more on my breathing and surroundings and meditate. I was also wearing my new Piranhas for their first double digit miles. I almost felt like I wasn’t wearing any shoes because they were so light. The amazing thing about this run was that it didn’t drain me, I finished strong, feeling more recharged and pumped up about running once again.

Video: Authors@Google presents Christopher McDougall (Author of Born To Run)

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Just wanted to share a video of Christopher McDougall discussing about his book Born To Run. I have to say that this book really changed my whole outlook in running and it’s one of the main reasons that inspired me to continue to run.

It’s interesting because he also talks about POSE technique which is the technique that I am currently using right now. The first 30 minutes of the video is just basically an intro and he highlights some of the stories in the book. The second half is a Q&A. Enjoy!

Day 54 – Off day thread…Something for inspiration!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

This week’s been a really busy week for me. Heading into the weekend, we got 2 birthday invitations on Saturday and a bunch of errands to run and a 13 miler. I even missed today’s Yoga. So I just decided to take a rest day today. The only physical workout I got in today was washing my car. That’s right, wax-on, wax-off, baby!

So for today’s off day thread, I’m going to share some inspirational post about running. One thing I do when I feel like skipping a run, I look for motivational articles like this one.

I don’t like all 101 items on that list but there are some pretty good ones there. The article is called 101 Kicks In The Butt from Runnersworld.com. Check it out.

Race For The Cure

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support the Susan G. Komen North Florida Race for the Cure® on October 17, 2009 to fulfill their promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and the more we raise, the more the North Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® can give back to fund vital breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in our own community and support the national research program.

Please join me in the fight by pledging in support of my
participation in the Race or contributing generously to Susan G. Komen North Florida Affiliate. 75% of your tax-deductible contribution will fund innovative outreach and awareness programs for medically uninsured and underinsured communities in North Florida. The remaining 25% supports the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® National Award and Research Grant Program.

Day 8 – Defining My Marathon Goals

Monday, September 14th, 2009

For today’s cross-training, I lifted weights and focused on upper body. I was going to do leg workouts but my legs are just so sore from yesterday’s long run. I focused on upper body workout instead. For a complete workout you can view my training log entry at my Runner’s World Training Log.

Today, I decided to list down some of my goals for this first marathon. I know I want to finish this race and finish in decent time. But since it’s sometimes I find it hard to focus or work on something if I don’t have it defined clearly. And since this is a long journey I also want to get something out of it too. So here are my goals that I hope to be able to achieve in this first marathon journey:

1. Survive – It doesn’t matter what time I finish. As long as I cross the finish line in one piece and not crawling in agony. I want to make sure I survive my training without injuries and always remind myself not to push it if I can’t.
2. Get Lean – Before I hit the gym, I was a weak, unfit and skinny 118 pounder. When I decided to start working on my fitness one of my personal goals was to change my physique from Esqueleto-like to something more athletic. I don’t want to look like those guys in muscle magazines though. I just want to be lean and have a better muscle definition. I hope all this training will help me reach that. I’ve now reached my target weight at 150lbs. I just want to have a better muscle definition and a more defined 6-pack. I’m close but not quite there.
3. Have fun – I want to enjoy this marathon experience. I put this on my bucket list anyway so I better make sure it was worth all the time and effort. I’ll make sure this journey will be one of those fun adventures that I can always look back and smile about.

So there you go, the 3 things that I will be working for. I’ll make sure to recite these to myself before I start my training.

Newly Discovered Treasure

I just stumbled upon these Ryan Hall training videos today. I just thought I’d share them for those who haven’t seen them yet. I’m looking to incorporate some of these workouts in the next following weeks. Thanks to Ryan Hall for taking the time to do this.
